Chicken Update

The 40 baby chicks we bought are all growing quickly and beginning to provide us with a few meals.

Combined with our existing flock and their offspring, we are raising about 60 chickens this year.

They are doing a wonderful job of clearing the land we fenced in for them. Also, the fence makes it much easier to locate the eggs. I love the idea of Free Range much more than the practical aspects of it.

Building Compost Bins

Our current system of compost building is a quick and free option for getting caught up on a late season.

First we recycle pallets and tye them together to form bins with excellent aeration, 1 cubic meter of filling space and easily dismantled for turning.
There is no cutting of materials in order to build the compost bins, a big time saver.

Second we collect horse and cow manure, also in abundance and free to the willing collector.

By alternating layers of leaves with our manure, we generate a hot comost within three days.
